Global Smartphone Data:

  • Global Hardware brand Q2 2014 shipments broke down as follows (IDC):
    • Samsung:  24.9%
    • Apple:  11.7%
    • Huawei:  6.7%
    • Lenovo:  5.2%
    • Others:  46.7%
  • In Q2 2014 Global Mobile Smartphone shipments hit an all-time high of 301.3 million units (IDC)
    • 84.7% of units shipped contained Andriod OS
    • 11.7% of units shipped contained Apple iOS
    • 2.5% of units shipped contained Windows OS
    • The remaining <1% is Blackberry and Other
  • Apple sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units in its first weekend of availability (Apple)
    • iPhone 5S and 5C sold 9 million units in its first weekend in September 2013 (*5S and 5C launch included China which iPhone 6 did not) (WSJ Online)
    • iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in its opening weekend in September 2012 (WSJ Online)
  • As of August 2014, the breakdown of iPhone devices in use in the market was as follows (Localytics):
    • iPhone 5:  27%
    • iPhone 5S:  25%
    • iPhone 4S:  21%
    • iPhone 4:  13%
    • iPhone 5c:  8%
    • Other:  5%

  • Top operating systems used by US subscribers for the three months ended in July 2014 are (Comscore):
    • Android:  52.5%
    • iOS/Apple:  41.4%
    • Microsoft:  3.3%
    • Blackberry:  2.5%
  • Top Smartphone brands in use in the US for the three months ended July 2014 are (Comscore):
    • Apple:  41.4%
    • Samsung:  27%
    • LG:  6.5%
    • Motorola:  6.3%
    • HTC:  5.3%
  • The top Smartphone Apps in July 2014 in the US were Facebook, reaching 71.6% of users, YouTube, reaching 53.7% of users
  • In July 2014  Yahoo! had two Apps break the top 15 in the US with Yahoo! Stocks reaching 30% of users (#9) and Yahoo! Weather reaching 25.5% of users (#12)
